December 27 - The swans have landed! Local fields and ponds are turning to white as hundreds of beautiful, majestic, migratory trumpeter swans make their annual arrival. The Trumpeter Swan, Cygnus buccinator, is the largest native North American bird, if measured in terms of weight and length, and is (on average) the largest living waterfowl species on earth. Along with their grey 'signets' (babies) and the accompanying flocks of Canada Geese, November to February is a great time to bird watch in the balmy Cowichan winter.
November 10, 2009 ~ Fall is a fabulous time of year in the Cowichan valley. The changing colors, the salmon run in local rivers, the migratory birds, the putting to bed of gardens and the busy yet quieting nature of the season. The grapes, apples and other fruits have been harvested and it's an interesting time to visit local wineries as they prepare their brew. The festive season is quickly approaching and the area has wonderfully unique and diverse shopping opportunities including the Damali Lavender Shop and other rural studios, galleries, bakeries and cheese shops as well as indoor markets, craft fairs and quaint 'old town' Duncan. So there's plenty of things to see and do, not to mention the anticipation of the first possible blanket of white creating picturesque rows of uniform humps over trimmed lavender. Curling up with a glass of local wine in a window seat overlooking this ever changing vista after a day of sights, sounds & delectable tastes just can't be beat.
This is a great time to visit Cowichan!
